Video Griot Research

The Video Griot Project also served as the research basis for a quasi-experimental study into information contextualization in skill-based videos and Gambians attitudes towards video education. To study information contextualization, Hannah created two versions of the same video: one that was a simple cause and effect chain to learn the skill and the other the same chain with more auditory contextual information at several key elements of the video presentation. The videos were recorded, scripted, and then voiced-over in the Mandinka language. These videos were then taken to three rural villages in The Gambia. Hannah and Masanneh showed one of the videos to over 90 Gambian village women. They asked the villagers to reteach what they had just seen and the number of key elements mentioned were counted. This gave a measure of learning from each of the videos. The villagers were also asked a number of questions about their attitudes and beliefs about video education for The Gambia. The data has been collected from these interviews and examine the learning from the videos.
